J. Scott Zufelt has been around construction all his life. His father, Gordon Zufelt, was a crane operator in the local union 9 and operated cranes all over Colorado, New Mexico, Montana and other midwest states. When his father was not operating cranes, he was building various things from fences to decks to eventually his own shop where he built a Jeep (his craftsmanship is second to none). When Scotty was 11, they moved to Kitsap County.

Scotty started his career in Kitsap County as a laborer for a local general contractor at the age of 18. He quickly learned his way around the job site and began to frame. After framing several homes with that company, he then moved on to the concrete industry. He worked for Kitsap county’s premier concrete company of the time.

Scotty was next asked to run a local concrete company in Poulsbo where he did jobs like the exterior finish work of the House of Awakened Culture in Suquamish and many unique residential projects like stained concrete and countertops. After many years of working concrete, he then decided to open his own concrete business, Star Concrete Design.

SCD was very successful and did such jobs as Christ Memorial Church, Jack in The Box in Poulsbo, Fox Island Post Office and hundreds of residential jobs. The Great Recession took a toll and with the fate of his family in his hands and a heavy heart, SCD’s doors were shut and replace with the surety of commercial construction work in the greater Seattle area.

Zufelt worked for a commercial concrete company and worked on projects like the Chihuly Museum and was flown to LA to pour the concrete for an undisclosed customer in the Hollywood Hills.

A general contractor asked him to join their team and he worked as a carpenter on projects like Stoneway Apartments, Madrona Assisted Living and BE Aerospace. Zufelt worked his way up to Foreman on such projects as Chophouse Row, designed by SKL Architects and Graham Baba. This was named one of the top 25 projects in the world by ULI, provided honorable mention at the AIA Honor Awards, and named the NAOIP 2015 Mixed-Use Development of the Year.

The Forman position turned into Assistant Superintendent on the University District Marriott and Evergreen Apartments.

The next steps are the key to what makes Zufelt Construction Services different from other contractors.

Zufelt became a Project Engineer on the Spring Hills Suites by Marriott in Issaquah then moved to the main office where he spent 2 ½ years as an Estimator for one of the northwest’s premier hotel construction companies.

Scotty never gave up on his dream of serving his community, and remembering Babe Ruth’s famous quote, “Never let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game,” he decided it was time to pick up where he left of with Star Concrete Design, only with a whole new set of business, administration, managerial and technical skills in his toolbox.

His belief is that with a good attitude, quality work, and transparency, he can help make a difference in the community.
